How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT: GEO for Indian Businesses

A clinic owner in Jaipur asks a question that more founders are asking this month: "If a customer asks ChatGPT for the best dentist near them, will it name my clinic?"

It is a fair worry. Customers increasingly ask AI assistants who to hire and which product to trust. When a competitor gets named and you do not, it is easy to read that as a traffic drop. Often it is a visibility problem in a place you were not looking.

This guide explains how to get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants in plain language. It covers what is well established, what is still emerging, and what to do first. It also explains why being recommended is only half the job.

One note up front: nobody outside these AI companies can promise you a recommendation. The steps below are widely accepted good practice, not a guarantee. Where something is uncertain, we say so.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, means making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand and trust, so they name you when a customer asks for a recommendation.

Classic SEO aims to rank your page in a list of links on Google. GEO aims to be included in a written answer. Instead of ten blue links, the customer gets a short reply such as "Three well-reviewed options in Pune are..." and often acts on it without scrolling.

The idea behind generative engine optimization in India is simple. An AI assistant builds its answer from what it can read about you on the web, what others say about you, and how consistent that information is. Your job is to make all three clear.

GEO vs SEO: what is actually different?

Most of the groundwork overlaps. A business with a clean website, a complete Google Business Profile and real reviews is in a good position for both. The difference is in the format of the result and the signals that matter most.

SEO GEO
Goal Rank a page in search results Get named inside an AI-written answer
What the customer sees A list of links to choose from A short answer, often with a few names
Main signals Keywords, page quality, links, reviews Clear facts, consistent details, third-party mentions, reviews
Content style Pages built around search terms Pages that answer a real question directly
Measured by Rankings, clicks, traffic Whether you are named, and for which questions
Tracking Mature tools and reports Mostly manual checks today (emerging practice)
Speed of change Gradual Less predictable, and assistants differ from each other

GEO does not replace SEO. It applies SEO habits with more attention to clarity and to what other sources say about you.

How AI assistants decide who to recommend

Nobody publishes the exact rules, and they differ between ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Some search the live web when they answer; others lean more on training. With reasonable confidence, we can say:

  • They favour businesses with clear, consistent information across many places.
  • They favour pages that directly answer the question being asked.
  • They give weight to what independent sources say about you, including reviews and press mentions.
  • They can only use what they are allowed to read.

Everything in the checklist below follows from those four points.

Start here: the 5-minute self-test

Before you change anything, find out where you stand. It costs nothing.

  1. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in separate tabs. Use a fresh chat in each.
  2. Type the question your customer would type. For example: "best dermatologist in Indiranagar, Bengaluru" or "best NEET coaching institute in Kota".
  3. Try variations: "affordable", "near me", and a Hindi version if your customers use it.
  4. Note who appears. Is it you, a competitor, or a directory?
  5. Note why they appear. Look at the sources the assistant cites, if any. Is it their website, Justdial, Google reviews, a news article?
  6. Write down what the assistant says about you, if it mentions you at all. Is the address, phone number, timing and service list correct?

Save the results in a sheet with the date and repeat monthly. Answers change, so one snapshot is never the full picture.

What you learn from this usually falls into one of three groups:

  • Not mentioned at all. The assistant has too little clear information about you.
  • Mentioned, but with wrong details. Your information is inconsistent across the web.
  • Mentioned, but after competitors. Others have stronger reviews, mentions or clearer pages.

Each problem has a different fix, which is why the test comes first.

The GEO checklist for Indian businesses

1. Make your name, address and phone number identical everywhere

This is the most basic step and the most commonly skipped. Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across:

  • Your Google Business Profile
  • Your website footer and contact page
  • Justdial
  • IndiaMART, if you sell to other businesses
  • Practo, for clinics and doctors
  • Zomato and Swiggy, for restaurants

"Dr. Mehta's Dental Care", "Mehta Dental Clinic" and "Dr Mehta Dental" may look like the same business to you. To a machine reading the web, they can look like three different ones. Pick one version and use it everywhere. Do the same for the phone format and address line.

2. Complete your Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is a strong source for local businesses, and many AI tools draw on local data. Fill in every field: categories, services, opening hours, photos, a short description and your service area. Keep hours accurate, including festival closures.

3. Write service pages that answer real customer questions

AI assistants respond to questions, so your website should contain the answers. Think about what customers actually ask on calls and WhatsApp, and turn those into page content.

  • A salon: "How much does a keratin treatment cost in Indore?"
  • A clinic: "Is root canal treatment painful, and how many visits does it need?"
  • A real estate firm: "Is this project RERA registered, and what is the possession date?"

Make the first two or three sentences of each page a direct answer, then add detail. Use plain language, include price ranges where you can, and name the locality you serve.

4. Add an FAQ section to your key pages

A short FAQ at the bottom of each main service page is useful to customers and easy for machines to read. Use real questions in the customer's own words. Keep each answer to a few sentences.

5. Add structured data (schema markup), explained simply

Structured data is a small block of code on your page that labels your facts for machines. It tells a reader that "this is the business name, this is the phone number, these are the opening hours", instead of making it guess.

Two types matter most for small businesses:

  • LocalBusiness labels your name, address, phone, hours, and the type of business.
  • FAQPage labels your questions and answers as questions and answers.

You do not need to write this by hand. Most website platforms, including WordPress and Shopify, have plugins or themes that add it. Ask your developer to add it and to test it with Google's free Rich Results Test. Structured data helps with traditional search for certain. Whether AI assistants use it directly is less clear, so treat that part as emerging practice. It is still cheap, harmless and good housekeeping.

6. Collect genuine reviews and reply to them

Reviews are one of the clearest trust signals for a local business. A few practical rules:

  • Ask happy customers for a review after a good experience, ideally with a direct link.
  • Never buy reviews or write fake ones. Platforms detect this, and it damages trust.
  • Reply to every review, including the critical ones, calmly and specifically.

Reviews that mention the service and locality in the customer's own words give assistants useful context about what you do.

7. Get mentioned on credible third-party sites

An AI assistant is more comfortable recommending a business that other sources mention. Realistic options for an SMB include local newspapers and city news sites (through a genuine story such as an opening or an award), industry associations you belong to, relevant trade directories, and partner websites that list you.

Quality matters more than quantity. One mention on a respected local site is worth more than fifty links from pages that exist only to sell links.

8. Do not block AI crawlers

Your website has a file called robots.txt that tells crawlers what they may read. Some sites block AI crawlers by accident, often through a security plugin or a default setting. If the assistant cannot read your site, it cannot use it.

Check your robots.txt by typing yourwebsite.com/robots.txt in a browser. Look for rules that disallow crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. OpenAI and Perplexity document these names for their crawlers. If you do not want them blocked, ask your developer to remove those rules. Blocking some AI crawlers on purpose is a legitimate choice. Just make sure it is a choice and not an accident.

9. Keep your information fresh

Out-of-date facts are a quiet problem: a closed branch still listed, an old fee chart, a dead phone number. Review your website and listings every quarter, and add a "last updated" date to pages such as fee structures and batch schedules.

Being recommended is only half the job

Suppose this works. A customer asks ChatGPT for the best salon in their city, your name comes up, and they tap your number or send you a WhatsApp message at 9:40 pm.

What happens next decides whether the recommendation was worth anything.

For most Indian SMBs, the first contact is a WhatsApp message. The customer has probably asked the same question to two or three businesses. The one that replies in seconds, answers the actual question and offers a time slot usually wins. The one that replies the next morning is often already forgotten. We wrote about this in why response time decides the sale.

This is where we fit, and we want to be clear about the boundary. Saranik does not sell GEO or SEO services. We build WhatsApp AI agents, automations and chatbots for Indian businesses. A WhatsApp AI agent replies instantly at any hour, in Hindi or English, answers common questions, qualifies the enquiry and books the appointment.

We run the same kind of system on our own business. It monitors 98 WhatsApp groups around the clock, has triaged more than 6,500 messages and has captured 120+ qualified leads. We would not sell you something we do not use ourselves.

So the complete picture is simple. GEO helps the right customers find you. A fast first reply turns them into paying customers. Fix the second problem first, or you will attract enquiries you then lose.

FAQ

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

There is no standard way for a small business to buy a place in ChatGPT's organic answers. Advertising formats in AI products are still evolving. The dependable route is to make your information clear, consistent and well supported by reviews and third-party mentions.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

There is no fixed timeline, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Assistants that search the live web may reflect changes to your website or listings sooner. Others update more slowly. Treat it as a steady monthly habit, and use the self-test to track progress.

Is GEO different from SEO, and do I need both?

They overlap heavily. Good SEO foundations, such as a clear website, a complete Google Business Profile and real reviews, also support GEO. The main additions for GEO are direct answers to customer questions, consistent facts across directories, and mentions on other credible sites. Think of GEO as an extension of good SEO, not a separate project.

Do I need a developer to do this?

Much of it you can do yourself: the self-test, listing consistency, your Google Business Profile, review requests and FAQ writing. A developer helps with structured data and robots.txt, both small jobs.

Does being recommended by ChatGPT guarantee more customers?

No. It gives you a chance to be considered. Whether you win the customer depends on how quickly and clearly you respond, and on the experience after that. Many businesses lose the enquiry in the first few minutes because nobody replies on WhatsApp in time.
