Agent-Friendly Website Checklist for Indian Businesses

A growing number of people now ask an AI assistant to do a task instead of opening a website: find a dentist near me, book a haircut on Saturday, check if the coaching batch has seats.

That raises a question most website owners have never had to ask. If an assistant visits your site on a customer's behalf, can it finish the job?

This guide explains one early effort to make that easier, what it means for a small business, and a checklist you can work through this month. No developer required for most of it.

How AI agents use websites today

Websites were built for people. A person sees a "Book now" button, understands it, and clicks it.

An AI agent has to work that out. Many agents do it by reading the raw code of the page, or by taking screenshots and guessing where the buttons are. Then they click and hope.

That approach has three weaknesses:

  • It is slow. The agent spends many steps just finding the right control.
  • It is fragile. A redesign, a pop-up or a cookie banner can break the whole attempt.
  • It fails on unusual flows. Multi-step forms, date pickers and "call to confirm" pages are where agents give up.

When an agent gives up, the customer does not wait. The assistant simply suggests another business.

What is WebMCP?

WebMCP is a proposed web standard that lets a website publish a list of named actions to an AI agent running in the browser. Think of it as a menu: "search services", "check availability", "book appointment", each with a clear description of what information it needs.

Instead of guessing at buttons, the agent reads the menu and calls the action directly.

Here is the status, stated carefully, because it is easy to overstate:

  • It is a draft from the Web Machine Learning Community Group. The draft states it is not a W3C Standard and is not on the W3C Standards Track.
  • Its editors come from Google and Microsoft.
  • Chrome released an early preview in February 2026, behind a flag, and now documents an origin trial from Chrome 149. Chrome's own documentation says the design is under active discussion and subject to change.

In plain terms: it is real, it is being tested, and it is not something every browser or every agent supports today. Anyone telling you it is already the standard is ahead of the facts.

How is it different from MCP?

You may have heard of MCP, the Model Context Protocol. It connects AI applications to a service's backend, which suits automation between systems.

WebMCP works at a different layer. Per the draft, a page using it can be thought of as an MCP-style server whose tools are written in client-side script inside the page, rather than on a backend. It is designed for moments when a person is present in the browser and working alongside the agent.

They are complements, not rivals. One serves software talking to services. The other serves an assistant helping a person on a website.

The draft also requires a secure context, meaning the site must run on HTTPS, and it spends real effort on risks such as prompt injection and misleading tool descriptions. Expect the details to keep evolving.

Do Indian small businesses need to act now?

Honestly, no. Most Indian clinics, coaching institutes, salons and restaurants do not need to implement WebMCP this year. Support is limited, the spec is moving, and your customers are still reaching you through Google Maps, Instagram and WhatsApp.

But the standard is useful for another reason. It shows what an agent needs from a business in order to complete a booking. Those needs are not technical. They are the basics that any visitor, human or machine, wants:

  1. Know what you offer.
  2. Know whether you are available.
  3. Book without a long back and forth.
  4. Get a fast confirmation.

If your business can do these four things, you are ready for whatever interface arrives next. If it cannot, no standard will rescue it.

The agent-friendly website checklist

Use this as a self-audit. Tick what is true today.

Area Question to ask Ready when
Services Can a stranger see everything you offer on one page? One clear list, one name per service
Pricing Is the price or a price range visible? Numbers in ₹, not "contact us"
Availability Can anyone see open slots or seats? Live, or updated daily
Booking How many steps from interest to confirmed slot? One form, no phone call needed
Confirmation Does the customer get proof at once? Message with date, time and address
Contact Is there a number that answers quickly? WhatsApp, answering within minutes
Basics Is the site HTTPS, fast and mobile friendly? Loads fast on a mid-range phone

Let us go through each one.

1. A clean service list

Put every service on a single page with one consistent name for each. "Root canal treatment" should not be called three different things across your site, your Google profile and your brochure.

Include what it is, who it is for, how long it takes and the price or range. Plain text, not an image of a price list. Screenshots and PDFs of menus are hard for agents and search engines alike.

For a coaching institute, that means each course with its batch timings, fees and eligibility. For a salon, each service with duration and price.

2. Live availability

"Call us to check" is the most common dead end. An assistant cannot phone on anyone's behalf, and a customer who has already asked an assistant will not go looking.

You do not need a complex system. A shared calendar that marks open slots, or a booking tool that shows the next available times, is enough. The aim is that availability is something a system can look up, not something a receptionist has to remember.

3. One-step booking

Count the steps from "I want this" to "it is booked". Every additional page, login or OTP costs you conversions with people and stops agents completely.

Aim for a single form with only what you truly need: name, phone number, service and a preferred time. Collect everything else after the booking is confirmed.

4. A WhatsApp number that answers

In India, WhatsApp is where customers already talk to businesses. It is also the most forgiving channel: a customer can ask a question in Hindi or English, get an answer, and confirm a slot in the same conversation.

The catch is speed. A reply that arrives the next morning loses the lead, as we explain in why response time decides the sale.

A WhatsApp AI agent can answer immediately, check availability, and book the appointment, then hand over to a person when a human is needed. If you are weighing it up, see our guide to a WhatsApp AI agent for Indian businesses. For clinics specifically, here is how to automate appointment booking on WhatsApp.

5. Prompt confirmation

After the booking, send a message with the service, date, time, address and a map link. Add a reminder before the appointment. Confirmations tell the customer, and any assistant acting for them, that the job is done.

Seven quick fixes you can do this week

  • Merge scattered service descriptions into one page.
  • Write the price or range next to each service.
  • Replace PDF menus and price images with text.
  • Add a single booking form above the fold.
  • Make sure your Google Business Profile matches your website exactly.
  • Put a WhatsApp click-to-chat button on every page.
  • Test it yourself: try booking your own business on a phone, and count the taps.

That last test is the most revealing. Most owners have never done it.

What to do about WebMCP itself

If you are a developer or run a product company, it is worth watching. You can try it in Chrome behind the documented flag or origin trial, define a few tools such as search and book, and see how agents use them. Keep your implementation thin and expect the API to change, because the draft is still moving.

If you run a clinic, a school or a shop, wait. Get the four basics right, and adopt the standard when your booking tool or website platform supports it, rather than building it yourself.

Where this leaves your business

Nobody knows exactly which assistants will matter most for bookings in India, or how quickly. What is clear is the direction: customers will increasingly delegate small tasks, and the businesses that are easy to transact with will get the work.

Being easy to transact with is not a new idea. It is a clean service list, live availability, one-step booking and a fast WhatsApp reply. You can do all four now, and they help with every customer you already have.

If you would like help, Saranik builds WhatsApp AI agents that answer enquiries, check slots and book appointments in Hindi and English. Message us on WhatsApp or visit saranik.in.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to make your website ready for AI agents?

It means a person's assistant can understand what you offer and complete a booking without a phone call. In practice: a clear service list, visible prices, live availability, a short booking flow and a fast confirmation.

Is WebMCP a finished standard?

No. It is a draft from the W3C Web Machine Learning Community Group, not on the W3C Standards Track. Chrome offers an early preview and an origin trial, and its documentation says the design may change.

What is the difference between WebMCP and MCP?

MCP connects AI applications to a service's backend. WebMCP lets a web page expose tools through client-side script, for an agent working in the browser while a person is present. They complement each other.

Do I need a developer to prepare my website?

Not for the checklist above. Organising your services, publishing prices, showing availability and adding a simple booking form can be done with common website and booking tools. A developer only becomes useful if you want to experiment with WebMCP itself.

Why does WhatsApp matter for agent-friendly businesses?

Because it is where Indian customers already talk to businesses. A WhatsApp AI agent can answer in seconds, check availability and confirm a booking, which makes your business easy to transact with whatever tool the customer uses. See the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent.
